Kugel glass, often referred to simply as Kugel, are heavy, antique glass Christmas ornaments, with the grape cluster shape being a notable and popular form, originating in Germany in the mid 19th century. These ornaments, whose name means “ball” in German, were initially too heavy for tree branches and were hung from the ceiling, though later smaller versions, including grape clusters, were designed to adorn trees.
This large example is 30cm x 18cm and comes with the metal top for easy hanging.
The Kugel evolved from earlier “witch balls” used to ward off evil spirits, which were later adapted and silvered around 1850.
